Makah tribe hunting a Gray Whale |
The article Cross Cultural Rem Ethnic the main issue that the author address is how whale hunting is like a sport for the tribe Makah tribe locate in Washingston state. The European has basic colonism this tribe by do the follow ing degarded their land, destroy their culture and depressed the people in the control . Also they brought disease such small pox killing of the tribe leaving only 654 in 1861. In a recent, discussion in class we dicover how the Makah tribe voluntarily stop whaling hunt because they didnt want to killing all the whale. Inaddition the United state had banned whale huntung in 1937 and they place on the endanger species list in1969. Since the government has banned whaling the tribe has reach a high unemployment. Which is causing for a high of poverty , domestic violence , and drug abruse . The year 1994 the gray whale was remove from the endangered list and request by makah and others. The very strange thing about this tribe is to me that whaling is spirtual connection culture but not all people in their culture believe that whale hunting was right . For instance the elders was not be used for food. Another issue the author make that thing that whale hunting is debate on treaty rights, tradition, spirtuality, social problem, knowing whale, and colonism and cultural imperalim. Both men and women play a particular role in this sport event. The men role was to basic go hunt for the whale . While the women had to stay in pitch black room because that way the gray whale would fight off the hunter ." From this exploration of the Makah whale hunt, certain guideline can be derived to aid antiracist white feminists and ecofeminist in developing ethical perspectives on cross cultural social and environemental issues" ( 21)
